Did you know that recent research by Rover (the network for Pet Sitters) reports that over 1 million dogs in the UK suffer from mental illness.

“Mental health issues in dogs is a very real problem, with dogs across Britain suffering from a range of disorders – most commonly depression and anxiety,” Louise Glazebrook, dog behaviourist and trainer said in an article for The Metro last year.

One simple way to work towards improving your dogs mental health and emotional wellbeing is by giving them a long lasting chew treat.  Chewing is a satisfying activity; it promotes calmness in your dogs behaviour and it fulfils their  natural instinct and desire.  It is also great for teeth and gum health.

If you have never tried any of these, I urge you to give it a go.  I have tried all of my treats on both Tedd and Delphine and they love chewing and will settle quietly for up to an hour and chew.

Here are some ideas for long lasting chews.

 Yak Chews

These are a hardened bar made of fermented Yaks milk.  They come in various sizes and are a very good, long lasting chew. They are made and enjoyed in the Himalayas for many years but are quite a recent thing in this country.

A little lime juice and salt is added to Yak/cow milk; it is hardened in a smoke house for 28 days and then cut into strips to create this cheesy chew.  It is very nutritious  100% natural, additive and gluten free, packed with protein, suitable for vegetarians and great for cleaning right up around the gums on teeth.

A great tip with these is when you get to the end and are left with a small piece, pop it in the microwave and it will puff up like a pop corn treat.

Antler horn

We stock our antler horns from Antos and here is what they have to say:

“Antos Antlers are from Red Deer and Fallow deer, much of which is from Scottish highland herds, and have simply been cleaned (with no chemicals) and cut to various sizes/weights for dogs to chew on. Sharp points have been removed to make them safe.Antler is a healthy chew, full of minerals and calcium. They are long lasting, and as they are unprocessed, they should not splinter either. The Antos Antler satisfies a dog’s natural urge to chew, whilst also helping to strengthen and clean teeth. There is no odour from antler, and as your dog grinds down the antler over time, there is also very little mess.Being a naturally grown chew, no two antlers are the same. Some are a harder dark brown colour whilst others are a softer greyish/white. They also come in various shapes and sizes, keeping your dog interested for longer. Our deer antler chews come from a sustainable, natural resource.”

Olivewood and Chew Root

Olivewood chews are made from annually harvested wood, from managed Olive trees, in and are 100% sustainable.  Olivewood is a close grained wood that is harder than most native woods. The chews are Simply graded, dried and sanded and then lightly infused with virgin olive oil. This makes for a healthy, safe and satisfying chew for any dog.

ChewRoots are another sustainable natural wood dog chew toy which are harvested by hand from tree roots, in protected areas ensuring there is no damage to the roots. Only the tuber of the root is harvested which then sprouts again, making them  eco-sustainable as well as a tasty dog chew.

Both of those chews are from Green & Wilds and stocked in our online store and Plymouth shop.

Also in the shop  and on the website we have our dog deli. This is an area full of natural treats that you can select your own pic ‘n’ mix.  They are not all long lasting chew treats, but all of of them are healthy, natural and good for your dog.

What’s even better, some of the items, like rabbits ears (which are also a natural anti-wormer by the way) are a by-product in the human food chain and would normally get thrown away; its good to know that nothing is wasted.

Other favourites are fish skins (which are long twists of skin which has been air dried),  chickens feet (which make a great crunchy treat), oxtail both natural and air puffed, pork rind (which is a roll of pig skin), meaty sticks, bull pizzle and we even have pigs in blankets (which is a sausage wrapped in pig skin).

The deli changes from week to week but is always full of  top quality produce for your dog.  If you visit online, you can select a bag of pic ‘n’ mix which I will personally select for you – there are 3 size options with the bigger bags automatically containing a yak chew.  This month there is a free bag of treats with every coat purchase too.

Hopefully we’ve helped you understand what amazing natural treats are available and how they can help beat the boredom or the doggy blues.
